Use the following test to pre-screen any work from home opportunity:

  •  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t take anyone’s word. Do your homework. Research every opportunity before you commit to it.
  • Any opportunity that tells you that “no skills are required” is bad news. Legitimate work at home opportunities gives you a reasonable amount of income for hard work.
  • Reject any work from home opportunity that requires you to pay for information or pay to work.
  • Most work from home opportunities do not advertise. They don’t have to since they offer a legitimate way for people to earn money. If you are clicking on an advertisement, have your B.S. meter up and running.
  • Search online the name of the business you are considering, read reviews, and seek out feedback from people who worked with them.

Employee Positions

“Employee positions” simply means that rather than working for one single employer, you work for several, just like an independent contractor would.

Some of the opportunities I have listed underneath will have employee advantages and W-2 type pay, but the majority won’t.

If you work from home, you will need to pay your own taxes, as an employer won’t do this for you. You will also need to take care of your own health insurance and any retirement savings.

Search Engine Evaluator

Google will always try to bring you the most relevant search results when you use it to find something. However, they don’t always get it right, and this is why search engine evaluators are needed.

A Search Engine Evaluator’s job is to give ratings to the results that are generated by popular search engines. An Evaluator can typically expect to earn anything from $10 – $15 per hour.

Below I’ve listed some places you can find employment as a search engine evaluator:

Customer Service Rep (Call Centers)

Using virtual agents to answer inbound customer calls is popular with many US companies like American Express and Walgreens. Working for these companies can generate up to $15 per hour, dependent upon your experience.

To work as a home customer service rep, you will require first-class customer service skills and a computer with a high-speed Internet connection. It’s also better if you can work in a quiet environment, so this job might not be suitable if you’re a stay at home mom with young children.

Below I’ve listed some places you can find work from home customer service opportunities:

Data Entry Worker

Data Entry Worker is fast becoming one of the most popular work from home jobs for moms. In this role, you simply have to input information required by companies into a variety of computer programs. So long as you have a good typing speed, a reasonable computer, and a fast Internet connection, then you could get work in this area. Some data entry jobs, however, will require more specialist skills.

Pay is often worked out according to hours worked, words typed or simply on a per-project basis. But be warned, the majority of data entry jobs start with a low level of pay.

Here are some great places to look at:

General Transcriber

Transcribers listen to audio recordings such as college lectures, interviews or even court hearings and then type up what they heard into a document format

Although the pay can fluctuate significantly, the median pay in 2012 worked out as $16.36/hour, making it one of the better-paid work from home jobs for moms.

Here are some places to look for Data Entry opportunities:

Document Translator

Are you fluent in another language? If so, then you could be hot property for potential clients. Many companies and individuals often require that documents be translated from one language into another. Provided you can accurately transfer the meaning of the document into another language; you can find plenty of opportunities for employment here.

These are places you can look for translation jobs online:

Online Tutors

These days it can be difficult for parents to find a suitable tutor for their children. Online tutoring is now providing parents with more flexible options than traditional tutoring can offer.

With tutoring required in literally hundreds of subjects, there are plenty of good work opportunities to find here. This is especially true if you are an expert in a particular subject or can speak a second language well.

Again you will require a good computer and a fast Internet connection to offer this service.

Here are some suggestions on where to look:

Freelancer

You may have come across the term “freelancer” before. In the online environment, a freelancer offers a service or package of services to potential clients. A real advantage is that you can work for several employers at a time.

Freelancers can often earn a great deal of money and are provided with great flexibility in their working conditions, as they are free to choose who and how much they work for. However, with no tax withheld from your paycheck, you will not receive any benefits.

Check out the various freelancing opportunities.

Magazine Writer

Writing for magazines can be highly lucrative. If you have top-notch writing skills, then you can earn big money from writing original content.

Pay ranges wildly in this kind of work and ranges from between $50 – $1000 per article written. This generally varies according to the publication and the type of article you have been given.

A good source of work that I highly recommend is The Writer’s Market, which is available in paperback and Kindle format from Amazon. Here you will find hundreds of magazines that will pay for content from freelancers.

Freelance Blogger

Although you are likely to earn less than magazine writing, you can still make serious money from freelance blogging. The name of the game here is creating blog entries for other blogs and businesses

Freelance bloggers can earn anything from $20 – $1000 per blog post according to who’s employing you and how much you write. I’ve personally earned a great deal of money from freelance blogging, and I can verify that this is a genuine opportunity if you have the right skills.

Here are some good places to look for work:

Copywriter

Copywriters concentrate on generating sales, unlike magazine writers or freelance bloggers, whose job is to entertain or inform. In this role, you’ll write sales-related content such as newsletters, sales pages, sales letters, and other marketing materials

Virtual Assistants

Virtual Assistants help out with a variety of duties that would normally be undertaken by the more traditional Personal Assistant. Depending upon who your client is, there is a great range of duties you may be asked to perform.

Commonly, duties that are required may include email management, social media management, data entry, editing, finding pictures, rescheduling of blog posts, and email outreach.

Having experience of using WordPress is a great advantage if you want to try your hand at being a virtual assistant.

The best way to find work in this area is to directly contact your potential clients. You could also try looking on job boards, but you might end up with less money than you could get from using contacts you found on your own.

That said, here are some great places to look for work:

Web Designer

For the creative types out there, web design could be an opportunity well worth taking. While many learn web design in a college course of some kind, some people are self-taught, often learning by simple trial and error.

As suggested with other positions, a great way to get started is to approach clients you already know to find jobs. Developing your own website in a way that showcases your skills is a fantastic way of getting people interested.

Here are some good places to look for web design jobs:

  • Freelancer
  • Fiverr – Use Add-On Options to Make More Money
  • 99Designs.com
  • Krop Job Board
  • Coroflot Job Board

Web Developer

A web developer lays the fundamental groundwork for website projects. To work professionally in this field requires extensive knowledge of scripts like CSS, PHP, HTML, and a generally good all-round coding ability.

Web development is a creative and technical forte. If you are creative and have the required technical knowledge, this could be a great fit for you. Web developers can make significant amounts of money, up to $170,000 a year, depending on the type of work undertaken.

To find web developer jobs, it’s a good idea to look in the same places you would look for web designer jobs. It’s also a good idea to look at traditional job search sites like Monster.com, Indeed.com, and CareerBuilder.com

Online Reseller (commission based)

Maybe you love online selling but don’t have any more items to sell? If this describes you, then working as a commission-based online reseller might be right up your alley.

In a nutshell, online resellers offer to sell items that other people no longer want, for a percentage of the sale price (commission). Online resellers will often charge a flat rate fee of about 15% for this service. You then sell these items and take your fee out of the sale price. It is a good idea to have a contract for each client you work for, to avoid any problems.

Good places to sell used items include eBay, Craigslist, and Facebook Yard Sales.

To find clients, you can either put the word out amongst family and friends, make people aware of your service using social media or simply put an ad in your local paper.

Many people dislike the inconvenience of having to sell their own things, so will gladly accept someone’s offer to do the hard work for them.

Small Business

Starting your own “small business” can be a great way to avoid having to work for one single company. This way, you can often work for several clients/companies at a time, in a similar way to freelancers.

I’ve listed some great work from home ideas here that, with a bit of dedication, can be turned into a great small business opportunity.

Author

Right now, it’s an excellent time to earn money from your writing skills. Online you can find an abundance of platforms that allow you to upload your eBooks and sell them for profit. If you want your books in print, then there are also places that can provide this service, should you desire to sell in this way.

However, take warning. Successfully selling your eBook requires more than simply writing and uploading it. You must be able to promote your book. And figure out what kind of topics are trendy right now.

If you decide to publish your own eBook, here are some popular platforms you can sell on:

Online Reseller

Can you spot a great bargain? If so, then you can make good money by simply reselling items. It’s worth noting that you don’t just have to sell your own items. Get down to sales at retail outlets or yard sales to find items you’ll be able to sell online at a profit.

Amazon is probably the most popular place to resell items, with eBay coming a close second. You can also import your own products to be sold on the same platforms.

Direct Sales

People who love selling, meeting people, and finding products they love can be very successful in direct sales. Many direct sales companies will let you promote their products online and through catalogs. Some companies would rather you have one to one sessions with possible customers and perhaps even throw house parties.

A great number of options exist when it comes to direct sales. It’s imperative that you carefully look over the opportunities presented to find the ones that show the greatest promise.

Here are some of the more popular companies:

To do this job well, you’re going to have to love people, as you will be interacting with a lot of them. Bear this in mind as you find suitable work from home opportunities.

Blogger

While there may be some bloggers who earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, this is the exception. There are lucrative possibilities in blogging, but success requires time and a great deal of hard work. Do you want to start making money as a blogger? Read my free step-by-step guide on how to start a blog.

Blogging is unlikely to make you any money quickly, so avoid it if you need money fast. In fact, you’re unlikely to make any money out of blogging until after your first year. That being said, blogging is something that can be easily fitted around your existing commitments. And a few hours a week could provide you with a small amount of extra income.

Additional Work From Home Income Sources

Please note that the opportunities listed here are very unlikely to generate a full-time income; so don’t quit your day job yet. However, they can be very good ways to boost your current earnings without having to leave the house. Because these things are so easy to do, they don’t tend to pay much. These can be a great way of cutting down on the costs of your Christmas shopping.

Swagbucks

Swagbucks is a site that has become increasingly popular in recent years. You can earn “swagbucks” daily by simply taking part in surveys, taking part in daily polls, using their search engine, redeeming coupons, and taking up special offers.

When you have a suitable stash of swagbucks, you can exchange them for gift cards or prizes. Popular gift cards include the $5 Amazon card and the Paypal gift card.

Even if you only use the Swagbucks search engine (powered by Bing) instead of your normal one, you can still accumulate a few gift cards throughout the year. To boost your earnings further, you can engage in the other offers as much as you wish. You can earn even more Swagbucks by referring friends and family.

InboxDollars

One of Inbox Dollars biggest advantages is the email reading feature. Just by reading emails (which are basically advertisements, and clicking the confirm button, you can earn some InboxDollars.

Similarly to Swagbucks, you can also, participate in surveys, search the web, and take up special offers that will boost your earnings. Simply opening an account will yield a $5 bonus. It’s worth noting though that you can only request a check when you have acquired $30. Checks are usually posted two weeks after you requested them.

Take Surveys

Although taking surveys is an increasingly popular way to make money online, it’s not a particularly great way to earn money. Once you have factored in time, your earnings for completing surveys will usually be less than $2 per hour. Many times your earnings will be pennies.

Many people, when starting to figure out how to make money online, try to earn money this way. You could complete hundreds of surveys, only to make a few extra dollars.

Although certainly not my first choice for making money, many people swear by them as an extra income source. So I’m going to give you some places to look for paid surveys.

Mystery Shop

As a Mystery Shopper, your job is to visit businesses or buy products then rate the service you experienced. This provides your clients with feedback on quality control, and many businesses need mystery shoppers to help maintain high levels of service.

Although it is a viable way to make money, it’s better if you live in a large town or city, as your transport costs will seriously diminish your earnings if you have to travel to another town.

You can sign up with some mystery shopping companies here:

Write for Content Mills

A Content Mill is a platform where businesses ask for specific articles. Writers can then choose which articles they would like to write and earn money from doing so. To get work for a content mill, you must provide a writing sample or undertake a writing test.

Writing for content mills can provide you with a means of generating a little bit of extra money as there are always new jobs being listed. On the flip side, content mills don’t pay much, and other writing jobs tend to yield considerably more. Another disadvantage is that many of the articles requested require a lot of specialized knowledge, which you are likely not to have (like the best shampoo to use on children, or the best places to see in a certain city, etc.)

You most likely won’t earn a full-time income writing for content mills. The pay will usually be from $1 – $10 per article. Writing as even a beginner freelance blogger will make much more comparatively, with earnings starting at about $20 per article.

Here are some places to help you get started writing for a content mill:

Time to Work

Hopefully, you will have found something on my list that fits your personality, set of skills, and your life in general.

Please also remember that I’ve worked hard to make sure that all the sources I’ve listed are accurate. As far as I know, these are all legitimate sources of income according to my research. But, it could so happen that I have made a mistake; we are all human after all. If you think that one of these companies should be omitted from the list, please let me know! Similarly, if you’ve had a fantastic experience with a company that isn’t listed here, tell me about it in the comments, and I’ll try to add it.
